Schauer Arts Center Announces Free Family Series Featuring "Movies in the Courtyard" and Shakespeare in the Park
The Schauer Arts Center is thrilled to announce its upcoming Family Series at the Courtyard, a summer-long celebration of film, theater, and community fun. All events in this series are free and open to the public thanks to a generous grant from the West Bend Insurance Company Charitable Fund, an affiliate of the West Bend Community Foundation.
Movies in the Courtyard
Grab your lawn chairs and blankets for three magical nights of cinema under the stars. Courtyard doors open at 7:00 pm and the movie starts at dusk. This is a free, non-ticketed event. Outdoor seating is limited; patrons are advised to bring their own lawn chairs. The lineup features family favorites that span generations:
- Wednesday, June 24: The Goonies
- Wednesday, July 29: The Princess and the Frog
- Wednesday, August 19: Happy Feet
Family Weekend featuring Optimist Theatre
On August 16, the Schauer Center will transform into a hub for all things Shakespeare. Optimist Theatre, the producer of Milwaukee’s celebrated Shakespeare in the Park, is bringing their 2026 touring titles to Hartford for the very first time ever for an immersive Family Weekend.
The weekend will feature two distinct productions:
- The Merry Wives of Windsor: Falstaff's Tale
Comic Comeuppance. Falstaff Foiled.
Falstaff's schemes backfire as Mistresses Page, Ford, and Quickly outwit him at every turn, with mischief and live music by Early Music Now. (40 minutes) - Richard III (Puppet Edition)
Puppet-Powered Murderous Mayhem
In a puppet-powered world, ambition turns deadly. Richard III, where ruthless schemes unfold with animal flair. (50 minutes)
This all-ages event is designed to make the Bard accessible and fun for everyone. The day will feature family-friendly activities, Renaissance games, pre-show programs, plus a special performance by Milwaukee’s Early Music Now concert create a full summer’s day ‘Shakespearience.’

Courtyard Public FAQ — What You Can & Cannot Bring
Q: Can I bring my own alcohol?
A: No — Wisconsin law prohibits bringing your own alcohol onto licensed premises. Only alcohol purchased and served by Schauer Arts Center is allowed. Our bar staff have you covered!
Q: Can I bring my dog to the courtyard?
A: We love furry friends, but only service animals are permitted in the courtyard.
Q: Can I bring my own food?
A: Outside meals aren't permitted, small snacks are welcome. We follow safe food service practices to keep everyone healthy — and we appreciate you doing the same with any snacks you bring.
Q: Can I bring water bottles?
A: Yes, absolutely. Water bottles (including insulated bottles) are fine — just remember, no alcohol.
Q: Can I bring a cooler?
A: No coolers allowed, please.
Q: What time are the Movie Nights?
A: Doors open at 7:00 PM, and the movie starts at dusk.
Q: Is there seating available?
A: Limited outdoor seating is available, so we strongly encourage you to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets! First come, first served on the lawn.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: A $5 per person suggested donation at the entrance. It's suggested, not required — and you're welcome to contribute more!
